Photos & accounts of some of the events surrounding revolution
Revolution that broke out on October 23, 1956, toppled the regime headed
by Mátyás Rákosi. Government of Imre Nagy announced the beginning of a
new, democratic era, withdrawal from arsaw Pact. Soviet troops withdrew.
On November 4th, Soviet army invaded in overwhelming numbers.
Prime Minister Nagy applied in vain for the help of the UN.. Thousands
arrested, deported or executed. Imre Nagy and others applied for asylum
at the Yugoslav embassy in Budapest, but were deported to Romania, |
