Military
coup on April 24, 1965, led to violence between military
elements favoring the return to government by Bosch and those who
proposed a military junta committed to early general elections. On
April 28, the United States intervened in the civil war by sending
20,000 troops to secure Santo Domingo and to restore order. An initial
interim government, headed by Imbert, was put into place.
Comment by John Bender on
17FEB2011: During
the Civil War
of 1965 we were assigned the duty of guarding the embassy and it's
personnel , destroying secret documents and assisted in the
evacuation of
American citizens and Dominican dignitaries to the Aircraft carrier
Boxer. |

August
1960, the Organization of
American States imposed diplomatic sanctions against the Dominican
Republic as a result of Trujillo's involvement in an attempt to
assassinate Venezuelan President Romulo Betancourt. These sanctions
remained in force after Trujillo's death by assassination in May 1961.
In November 1961, the Trujillo family was forced into exile.
Henry
Dearborn was serving as Chargé d'Affaires ad interim when
