Military coup on April 24, 1965, led to violence between military elements favoring the return to government by Bosch and those who proposed a military junta committed to early general elections. On April 28, the United States intervened in the civil war by sending 20,000 troops to secure Santo Domingo and to restore order. An initial interim government, headed by Imbert, was put into place.
Comment by John Bender on 17FEB2011:  During the Civil War of 1965 we were assigned the duty of guarding the embassy and it's personnel , destroying secret documents and assisted in the evacuation of American citizens and Dominican dignitaries to the Aircraft carrier Boxer.

Santo Domingo was known officially as Ciudad Trujillo in honor of dictator Rafael Leónidas Trujillo, who governed from 1930. Following his assassination in 1961 the city was renamed back to Santo Domingo.

August 1960, the Organization of American States imposed diplomatic sanctions against the Dominican Republic as a result of Trujillo's involvement in an attempt to assassinate Venezuelan President Romulo Betancourt. These sanctions remained in force after Trujillo's death by assassination in May 1961. In November 1961, the Trujillo family was forced into exile.

Henry Dearborn was serving as Chargé d'Affaires ad interim when the U.S. severed diplomatic relations with the Dominican Republic, Aug 26, 1960.
