Comment from Byron Wailes: I went on special assignments while stationed in Addis.  I when to Beruit, Cairo, & Damascus.  I even got married while in Addis to my current and only wife who's father worked for the Italian Embassy.  I had a great time while stationed there.  I was actively involved with several community events.  Like the Ethiopian Tae-Kwon-Do Association.  I have 8MM film which captured the riots/demonstrations.

TSgt. Paul B. Sullivan,
Watchstanders: Cpl. Charles Reed Ayers, Cpl. Donald E. Brill, Cpl.William Robert Burnett,
These were the first Marines in Ethiopia. The following comments by William R. Burnett, 26JAN2010: Don, Reed and I met in Korea while assigned to the 1st Medical Battalion, In those days, you had to have a recommendation in order to be assigned to State Department Duty. Our recommendations came from a Navy Doctor, Lt. Commander Thornberg.

After graduation, we were assigned to various Embassy's.  While awaiting deployment, we were approached by Tech. Sgt. Sullivan, who informed us that he had been assigned to head the first Marine Detachment at the American Embassy in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.  During the training, he had noticed that we three seemed to hang together and would we be interested in going to Ethiopia with him?  After some checking, we decided to join Tech Sgt. Sullivan only if we all three went.  He said "No Problem" and got our assignments changed.

At that time, Ethiopia had been declared a one year assignment.  However, at the end of the first year we all asked for a years extension, which was granted.  Don, Reed and TSgt. Sullivan all left after two years.  I was able to a six month extension and permission to get married.  Another first for the Marine Corps, Marine marries in Ethiopia.
