Comments by Robert Fischer
- 03 JUN 2010: We
were the last Marines to stand post before turning over of Post 1
to the
local guard. I dont know what the timespan was before another
Det. got
there to take over. I finished out a tour in Manila, Schrader
went to
S.Korea, Gunny Johnson went to Ankara and I´m not sure about the
others We
were a very close Embassy having pool parties at the house and everyone
taking
care of one another if anyone needed something...not only within the
Det but
within the Embassy as well. |

From
Thomas Gafford (MEGA Member - 10/04/2009 -
Not only did I serve
in Georgetown, I was also the first NCOIC, and the first Marine in
country. However, we were not allowed to call ourselves Marines, and
everything was in civilian clothes. Everyone in Georgetown knew who we
really were, but covert was the deal with the government of Guyana, so
we did what we had to. We were known as the DOS Embassy Security
Detail, Georgetown. I opened the post about 20 August 1972 , and
remained there until Feb 73 when I went to Teheran as NCOIC when
Richard Helms took over as Ambassador.
I got three
watchstanders directly from the class then graduating, and two from Co.
D. I got to Georgetown about three weeks before my troops arrived, and
had to get everything set up. There was no Marine House, none of the
stuff called out in the State/MC Memorandum of Agreement, and the only
thing in my office at the Embassy was a telephone in the middle of the
floor. I spent what time I had getting a house rented and furnished,
hiring servants, etc. The GSO basically gave me a blank
check. About the most fun I ever had.
