Comments From Gregory Bilyeu on 20JAN2011: The
1980 Marine Corps
Ball was held on November 7, 1980 in Reykjavik.
The guest of honor was DCM Kochanek. Ambassador Ericsson was out
of the
country at that time. As was our custom, we invited the SNCO’s
&
Officers from Marine Barracks, NAS Keflavik, Iceland to attend.
The
Marine Barrack’s 1stSgt participated in the Cake Ceremony but I cannot
find or
recall his name. Hopefully someone there will remember.
One thing we had in the
Marine House Bar was the Polar Bear Patch originally worn by the
Iceland
Marines in 1941. I cannot recall who gave it to us but it was in
a frame
on the wall of the bar near the ship’s bell (whatever happened to that
as
well?) The patch was originally worn by the British 49 Division
when they
occupied Iceland
in 1940. It was passed along to the US Marines when they arrived
to
relieve the British. There was a short history of the Marine’s
time in Iceland published several years ago by the US
Marine Corps entitled “Outpost in the North Atlantic.”
It was written by retired Colonel James Donovan and is a great
historical
perspective of the US Marines stationed there during the early part of
WWII. |

From
Gregory Bilyeu - MEGA Member -10/19/2009: I was assigned to Reykjavik
from October 1979 to February 1981. My original Detachment
Commander was Sgt (later CWO) Gary Dixon. Sgt Mike
Pettet was the A/Slash. The Ambassador was the late Richard
Ericson (heck of a good man). It was a great posting, hardly
deserving of being classified as a “hardship
post.” Frankly it was more like a large tight knit
family due to the small Embassy staff and great relationship with the
locals.
