Diplomatic relations between the United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran were terminated with the seizure of the U.S. Diplomatic Mission to Iran.

The U.S. Embassy and AmConGen in Tehran, Iran were seized by Islamist students supporting the Iranian Revolution on 4NOV79.  Between 19 and 20NOV09, thirteen men and women captured were released, including four members of the MSG Detachment: Sgt. Ladell Maples (23) , Sgt. William Quarles (23), Sgt. David Walker (25) and Cpl. Wesley Williams (24).

First Marine Security Guards assigned to U.S. Diplomatic Missions.  Six Marines reported to the U.S. Embassy in Bangkok, Thailand and nine reported to the Embassy in Tangiers, Morocco.

MSGs who successfully complete 24 months in the MSG Program are retroactively eligible for the MSG Ribbon (SECNAV Inst. 1650.1H dtd 22AUG06).

Memorandum of Agreement between the Department of State and the United States Marine Corps.  The U.S. Marine Corps agreed to provide enlisted personnel to serve at U.S. Diplomatic Missions worldwide to protect classified materials and American lives and property.  The Marine Corps personnel assigned to this duty will report directly to a designated DOS Security Officer at the Embassy or Consulate they are assigned.  This formalized the post-WWII DOS/USMC relationship that dates back to the early beginnings of our nation.  Command structure HQBn, HQMC / RMO Region 2.  A Regional Marine Officer (RMO) was assigned to each of the four regions and was responsible for all MSG Detachments within that region.
