Memories from Charles
Patrick: I remember the
following -
Having Christmas
parties when I arrived in late January until sometime in March.
There aren’t many things to in Dhahran.
Playing volleyball
daily or almost daily with Consular staff and other MSG’s. I
remember when the Consulate staff including the MSG’s played the Saudi
national volleyball team. We were creamed! I still don’t
know whose idea that was.
One of the female
secretaries going to Egypt and the her guide being offered two camels
and two donkeys for her.
Marine Corp Ball in
November being held outside on the Consulate grounds – where we played
volleyball daily.
How close the MSG’s
were because we were the only five Marines on the east coast of Saudi
Arabia. The other five Marines were in Jedi (American Embassy) on
the west coast of Saudi Arabia.
Running along the
pipeline between 12:00 am and 1:00 am in the morning. When
ordered not to do that anymore, I ran during the day (it was August
with temperatures in the 110 to 120 degree range) until I was again
ordered not to do that anymore.
Being invited to
the Consulate General’s home for Christmas dinner. That was
terrific. I truly appreciated his invitation.
Purchasing my first pair of jeans to go horseback riding.
Wild camels, wild
saluki (dogs), and wild donkeys coming unto the compound where we
chased them away.
That ARAMCO was
like a small American community in the middle of nothing. It was
great to get to visit it.
The Premier of the
Sudan visiting Dhahran. I ran into his convoy while going to the
ARAMCO. The road was lined with Saudi troops every 20 feet or
so. He was preceded by a jeep with a 50 cal machine gun and
followed by one.
Visiting an Amir as
part of a Swedish Trade Mission. We sat on the floor with our
toes pointed away from the Amir.
Flying to Bahrain
for the marriage of a couple from the Consulate Foreign Officer
staff. We flew on General Douglas McArthur’s aircraft, a
DC-3. It had a red velvet interior for seats and the red velvet
lined most of the interior of the aircraft.
Going to the
underground Christian church that was located in Dhahran.
