In 1948, the Department of State (DOS) and the United States Marine Corps (USMC) issued a Memorandum of Agreement stating  the Marine Corps would supply active duty Marine Corps personnel to protect classified materials, American lives and property in U.S. DOS diplomatic missons worldwide.  These USMC personnel, to be known as Marine Security Guards,  would report directly to a designated DOS Foreign Service Officer at each mission.  Command structure was HQBn, HQMC / RMO Region 2.  A Regional Marine Officer (RMO) would be responsible for several posts within each of the four then designated RMO regions.

In 1948, on the eve of independence from the British Raj, Gandhi was assassinated by a Hindu fanatic. Jawarhalal Nehru, also a leader in India's independence cause, became the first Prime Minister. Nehru was a successful leader, steering the young nation through a period of peace that was contrasted by the rule of Lal Bahadur Shastri, who fought Pakistan after it invaded two regions of India. Shastri died in 1966 after only 20 months in power, and he was succeeded by Nehru's daughter, Indira Gandhi.

1947
Ambassador:  Henry F. Grady
Regional Marine Officer (RMO):   The Marine Security Guard Program was not implemented until 1949, however, the DOS/USMC relationship dates back to the early beginnings of our nation.

On August 15, 1947, India became a dominion within the British Commonwealth, with Jawaharlal Nehru as Prime Minister. When British "Raj" colonial rule ended in 1947, enmity between Hindus and Muslims led the British to partition India, creating East (Dacca) and West (Karachi) Pakistan under Mohammed Ali Jinnah, where there were Muslim majorities. India became a republic within the Commonwealth after promulgating it's constitution on January 26, 1950.

Wikipedia Reference:
The border between India and Pakistan was determined by a British Government-commissioned report usually referred to as the Radcliffe Award after the London lawyer, Sir Cyril Radcliffe, who wrote it. Pakistan came into being with two non-contiguous enclaves, East Pakistan (today Bangladesh) and West Pakistan, separated geographically by India. India was formed out of the majority Hindu regions of the colony, and Pakistan from the majority Muslim areas
