In 1949, Marine Security Guards began to be assigned to US DOS diplomatic missions worldwide.  The very first MSG Detachment, consisting of six Marines, reported on-post at the American Embassy, Bangkok, Thailand.

MSGs who successfully complete 24 months in the MSG Program are retroactively eligible for the MSG Ribbon (SECNAV Inst. 1650.1H dtd 22AUG06).
1948
Consul General:
Regional Marine Officer (RMO):  The Marine Security Guard Program was not implemented until 1949.
NCOIC:

Watchstanders:
In 1948, the Department of State (DOS) and the United States Marine Corps (USMC) came to an agreement that the Marine Corps would supply active duty personnel to protect classified materials, American lives and property in U.S. Diplomatic Missions worldwide.  These USMC personnel, to be known as Marine Security Guards, would report directly to a designated DOS Foreign Service Officer at each mission.  Command structure was HQBn, HQMC / RMO Region 2.  A Regional Marine Officer (RMO) would be responsible for several posts within each of the then four designated  RMO regions.  A formal MSG Training Program did not commence until November, 1954.

In 1948, on the eve of independence from the British Raj, the father of India Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, was assassinated by a Hindu fanatic.  Jawaharlal Nehru, also a leader in India's independence cause, became the first Prime Minister.  Nehru was a successful leader, steering the young nation through a period of peace.

1947
Consul General:
Regional Marine Officer (RMO):   The Marine Security Guard Program was not implemented until 1949.
NCOIC:

Watchstanders:
On August 15th, 1947, India became a dominion within the British Commonwealth of Nations, with Jawaharlal Nehru as Prime Minister.  Conflict between Hindus and Muslims led the British to partition India, creating West and East Pakistan under Mohammed Ali Jinnah, where there were Muslim majorities.  India became a republic within the Commonwealth after promulgating it's constitution on January 26th, 1950.
