Comments from Mark Gardner 14NOV2011:
Place
where I meet my wife of 29
years J 3 great kids later.
We
used to live in a town house
located at 22 Nassulaan. It was a 10 min. walk from the
house to the embassy.
Our
detachment was instrumental in
embassy policy. We
used to be allowed to use
embassy vehicles for leisure. They discontinued this policy.
Something
to do with a 4 car
pile up in Rotterdam – large animal stickers attached to the doors and
hood. No persons were injured in the
changing of the policy.
Shortly
after our detachment
rotated through, the embassy changed this policy (sorry guys).
It
was a small detachment, size was 5.
Disco
was HUGE at the time so it
was hard for the Marine House to get a ‘kick’n TGIF’ going.
In
order to make some money, we
switched from being an ‘American Bar’ on Friday s to being a very
active member
of the local dart circuit. We subscribed to about 2 or 3 area
leagues, 2
nights a week. I think all in all, we did better off. The
crowd was
easy to please, drank a TON of beer, and everyone had a good time. We
sucked at darts, but had a good
time anyhow.
For
being a fairly ‘low key’
post, I’ve some fairly stong memories of actually how well
prepared we
were. We trained a fair bit (physical, tactical, etc) –
always
thinking we were going to be the next target of something or another.
Best
thing we ever did?:
we got a mail order company to make up customized ‘letterman
jackets’.
Each jacket was red, yellow strip down the sleves. The front had
the
Marine Corps emblem. The other side had our first name.
The
back had U.S. Marine Corps across
the top. The second line was the name of
our first post (everyone different). The third line was the “The
Hauge”….30 years ago – the jacket still
fits,
still looks good and it’s the ONLY ONE of it’s kind ….

Comments by John S. Leiter:
I’m very proud to say I was a Marine Security Guard
at the
American Embassy in The Hague, Netherlands . I served from 1969 – to
1971. I arrived a Lance Corporal left as a sergeant
(promoted by John William Middendof II, Ambassador ).
I enjoyed learning the dutch language and speaking to all my dutch
friends as well as the locals . There was a times those not on
duty were placed on standby due to Vietnam protest in front of the
embassy. During that time I rode with the Ambassador as security
to and from his home. During my tour I got to be part of the
security for the astronauts of the Apollo 11 when they made their
Friendship Tour to Amsterdam . I only wish I could go back
to visit the embassy before they build and move to the New embassy .
The dutch people are so friendly they stole my heart and have my
respect . Netherlands mijn thuis weg vahuis ( Netherlandmy home
away from home).
