MOS: OCCUPATION: USMC Bio: Exerpt from VFW Magazine, Sept 2000 (by Tim Dyhouse) Many times, a Marine security guard is the only line of defense between an angry crowd and U.S. diplomats serving at besieged embassies. Former Marine Corps Commandant Charles Krulak illustrated this point in 1999 when he noted the bravery of Cpl. Steven J. Crowley. Crowley’s vigilance, in the face of a hostile mob attacking the U.S. Embassy on Nov. 21, 1979, in Islamabad, Pakistan, most certainly saved the lives of some 100 staff members as they scrambled to the safety of the embassy’s vault. "The noise was deafening and there was smoke and blood everywhere," Krulak said. "Through all of this, Cpl. Crowley continued to man his post until he was fatally struck by a bullet. As he lay bleeding to death, the last of the embassy staff madeittothevault." Additional Information:
