OCCUPATION: Retired / VFW Quartermaster USMC Bio Personal Bio:: Email received from Charles on 11/02/2004 Hello Jack, My name is Charles DePaoli. I belong to the Marine Corps League located in Ticonderoga, NY. In fact that is how I found one Marine I was stationed with in Rome, Italy just about three years ago this month. Through him, Angelo Salustro, I got five more addresses of former Marines that I know. In fact I saw three of them in Biloxi, Ms this past April. That is after 51 years. Our Marine Corps League last year and this year will celebrate again the Marine Corps Birthday at my VFW Post 5802 in Mineville, NY on Nov 6. It is always a gala affair. Our League has hooked up with a Marine Detachment near Pougkeepsie and they attended last year and I think they will be here again this year. I am the Quartermaster (treasurer) of our VFW Post and reluctantly took the position again last August since the former QM sort of dropped the ball. I am severely hearing impaired and have a very hard time at meetings trying to understand what is going on. Thank goodness for this computer because I updated our membership roster and out of 178 members I made over fifty corrections. In fact now I am going to go to the VFW site and get a new updated roster to bring to our VFW monthly meeting this coming Thursday. I was one of the first Pfc.'s to go on Embassy Duty in 1953. Then I stayed for two years and three months. A lot of Marines got sent back early because of drinking problems and other incidents. I was extended to go to the Big Four Conference in Geneva, Switzerland. That was a great assignment. I was Sgt. of the Guard at John Foster Dulles' villa, I guarded an Atomic Reactor behind the Palais de Nations building. The twelve dollars per diem each day wasn't hard to take either. Ciao for now and have a good, happy and safe Marine Corps Birthday. DePaoli |
