| As my career
developed, and I was given the opportunity to become a
Marine Officer, I was pleased to meet others who had 'been
on the duty' ...They were usually 'above their peers' more
motivated, and squared away, and just seemed to be more sure
of themselves. Their ability to act in a timely manner,
their confidence, and decision making ability was always
present. Among the most satisfying of my myriad duties as a
Field Grade Officer, was sitting as a member of a Warrant
Officer selection board. It was satisfying, but more nerve
grinding than I ever imagined...The many records and
applications of candidates reassured me of my pride in being
a Marine and among so many outstanding people who bore the
title. Bottom line here... nearly every candidate for
selection to WO who had successfully completed a tour as a
MSG was selected ...I would guess about 98%...some were just
too lacking in other areas. I attribute my career success to
my 'successful MSG tours'...1961-1964...I will always
believe that we 'Plt 346'MCRD,San Diego, were destined to
free the World of decadent Communism...by bullet or
bayonet...Yep, we were 'bad'...but when I watch the Military
Channel showing Marine Corps training, etc., I thank God
that our Corps will live and thrive, and keep some SOB from
dropping a mortar round on my grave...

love my time on embassy duty and have learned that past

days may be numbered, I hold my past days as a Marine
(061458-063188) very close to my heart..the Corps was my
life, and remains so. I'm blessed that my bride of (now)
forty years accepted that life and raised our sons to be
solid citizens ... not Marines, but our youngest was
recently promoted to CPO in the USCG, and our eldest is
"some kind of big cheese" at a major manufacturing and
producing company in Oregon. No "orange jump suits" among
them ... Sorry to "gas on" ... just trying to find another
Marine with whom I may have served. I realize that my
"Detachment Mates" are approaching the age when this sort of
contact isn't available/viable. Say, okay, my short bet is
that many of you (my MEGA brothers/sisters can't even
